The Chinese pork-and-flatbread sandwich known as Rou Jia Mo has been called "the world's oldest hamburger". Like much in China, its precise origins are shrouded in the mists of time.
The direct translation for Rou Jia Mo is “meat in a bun,” which sort of makes it similar to what we’d think of as a hamburger, or maybe a Chinese sloppy Joe.
Meat lovers would appreciate the generous portion of pork given. The proteins are also super fragrant, as the pork is marinated overnight in a house-made braise.
Rou Jia Mo is steadily gaining in popularity and availability in the U.S., thanks to restaurants like Xi’an Famous Foods in New York City. In fact, its enduring popularity has already spawned hundreds of restaurants worldwide.
