First, screens and grit traps remove solid waste (e.g., non-flushable items), some of which is composted. Next, sedimentation separates sludge from water. The water then flows through filter beds coated with microorganisms that break down pollutants, leaving behind humus (dead microbial biomass) removed in settlement tanks. Finally, treated water undergoes rigorous testing (e.g., suspended solids, biological oxygen demand) before being safely released into rivers or the sea.
