The caption below is from the original poster, but read it to see how exploitation of this industry has been the go to money maker.
In the Belle Époque and earlier, tiny candles were used as a way to measure time - particularly in brothels, or so the legend goes. Supposedly, you’d light one of these candles (with it’s own little holder built right into the box!) at the start of your visit, and it would burn for exactly seven minutes. When it went out, your time was up. These so-called “brothel timer candles” are now steeped in romantic lore, especially when tied to Paris’s Maisons Closes, high-end 19th century brothels famous for their discretion.
In truth, these candles were used by everyone. Around 1900, when a standard match wouldn’t burn long enough to light a room’s worth of candles or seal a letter with wax, you’d use one of these. In reality, they burned for 1–3 minutes, not 7. Why the association with brothels? Roche & Cie, one of the manufacturers of the candles, discovered that he’d sell more product if he put printed images of sexy ladies on the box. He did, and sales soared. And the myth took hold.
This box came from a Montmartre antique market, and dates to around 1900. Still intact and full of character, it contains many of the original candles. The woman on the front smiles seductively.
